Cognitive Health: Running For Your Brain After 50

Maybe you’ve noticed names slipping faster than they used to.
Maybe you walk into a room and wonder why you’re there.
Maybe you just want your mind to stay sharp as your body keeps moving.
Maybe you’ve already learned—a run clears more cobwebs than a crossword.
Here’s the truth:
Running keeps your brain young.
Not perfectly. Not forever.
But enough to matter.

WHY MOVE FOR YOUR MIND?

We’re chasing brainpower.
Running, jogging, walking—whatever you call it—feeds the brain.
Blood flows. Stress falls. Dopamine and serotonin rise.
It’s not magic. It’s movement.

FIVE WAYS RUNNING SHARPENS THE MIND

  1. Clears Mental Fog
Fifteen minutes on your feet beats another cup of coffee.
  2. Builds Memory Pathways
Movement grows new connections in your brain. Scientists call it “neuroplasticity.” We just call it remembering where the shoes are.
  3. Lowers Stress
A run lifts your heart rate now, so it hums calmer later. You sweat the junk out of your head.
  4. Boosts Mood
Ever finish a run lighter than when you started? That’s endorphins. Nature’s gift.
  5. Sharpens Sleep
Better days bring better nights. Deep sleep builds a clearer tomorrow

let’s run forever.

THE PERSONAL MILE

Tuesdays and Thursdays. For 38 years.
Teaching days. Four classes back-to-back at Washington State University. Sometimes five.
Up at 3:15 a.m. Bathroom. Lace up. Three miles in the dark. Shower. Coffee. Drive 78 miles to Pullman. Teach. Drive home. Dinner. Rollerblades with my boys.

Snow. Rain. Fatigue. The run always came first.
My colleagues thought I was just “energetic.” Truth? My brain was primed by pavement.
Those miles gave me the edge to teach hard, to perform, to push my students.
Not just body strong. Mind sharp.

TOOLBOX: Training the brain by training the body

Keep It Regular
Three short runs or walks a week beat one epic effort.

Mix Intensity
A brisk walk clears thoughts. A harder run sharpens focus. Alternate.

Take It Outside
New scenery = new sparks. Trails, parks, streets—it all works.

Leave the Headphones Sometimes
Let your mind wander. The best ideas show up between footsteps.

Track Mood, Not Just Miles
Notice how you feel after. That’s the true reward.

Every mile primes more than muscle.
It sharpens your mind for the long run of life.
Stay moving. Stay thinking.
Let’s Run Forever.
